Default Factory Nav in Non Nav Car

Hey, so I've had a 2012 Mustang GT Premium (with Sync but not NAV/Touchscreen). Basically I called the dealership and said I want the Nav and all the bells and whistles and they said sure, it's do-able. $2500 for all parts and labor.

I'm reading threads saying it's not possible to go from Non nav - Nav.. or that it's far better to go aftermarket.

Basically I want the sexiest unit, needs GPS, needs touchscreen, and cannot lose ANY functionality on ANYTHING. Is this possible with aftermarket, or with OEM? If so, which route is best?

As I understand it, SYNC dies with anything aftermarket. Then you have to have a different bezel which might require repositioning of the climate controls. There are definitely some aftermarket options out there and frankly, you're probably going to get better sound quality out of most of the aftermarket double din solutions out there.

So if you're willing to give up SYNC, you have options aplenty. Otherwise plan on ponying up 2500 bucks.

EDIT : I just googled it for you and apparently, there are methods to retain SYNC with an aftermarket head unit.

Or this....

This is one of the banner ads here on the MF!

Just yesterday I had the Pioneer AVIC-x940BT installed in my 07 Shelby (800 head unit with all the bells and whistles) and $160 Alpine HU installed in my wife's 97 vert with Mach 460. Im amazed and disconcerted to actually say this, but the Alpine does seem to sound a little better than the Pioneer. I kinda wish I'd stuck with my first instinct but it's likely I need to work the EQ on the Pioneer to find the sound Im looking for is all. But the Alpine sounded great almost immediately with very little tweaking.

Don't understand the need for nav built in.. Phones and tablets can do it.. I guess for the looks of the screen it's cool, but I'm much happier saving 2500 and using my phone mounted on the car when I absolutely need navigation..

agreed ^^ Yea it looks cool and it makes the boring stock dash a little nicer, but not 2500

Better ways to do it.. An avic-d3 where you can custumize the look and even have digital display gauges with external sensors.. Cheaper too, and it's not hard to wire up a "sync" like system..

Well I would look aftermarket for sure, but I'm planning on putting a backup camera in it as well. Basically I want something that looks great, has tons of features and I won't lose sync/bluetooth, etc. Otherwise what was the point in paying for it in the first place? Plus I can't do the install, so I need somewhere to do it for me. And Ford gives me the warranty, do you get warranty with aftermarket stuff? Like I said, I can't do any of that stuff so if something breaks I NEED warranty

Also, if I'm reading right.. putting the DVD in every time for Nav is complete uselessness. In this day and age that's low quality. Plus a hassle that I don't want.

Also my phone doesn't read GPS out loud to me, nor is the screen very big, nor is it very accurate, and it does not have very many POI that i've tried finding (Newer Blackberry).
