external cd/dvd burners are pretty cheap these days. If you only have usb 2.0 available on the laptop, you’re kind of out of luck. That’s going to be the bottleneck (slow). If you have usb 3.0 available, get a newer drive that’s compatible with it. Those rival the speed of internal drives
