possible rip off?!? need help
ok, i got 2 MTX 10" subwoofers handed down to me from my cuzin.. i dont exactly know what madel or any of the specs...but i bought a box and put it in my trunk, i was thinkin of just getting a low grade amp oir whatever.. somthing to just get by ya now.. not lookin to spend alot of money cuz im buying the new car soon... so i was looking at a 300 watt amp for both of em.. i have another amp powering the 6 speakers inside the car, i went to best buy and the guy said... "those things KICK, ur not gunna have enough juice for those suckas with that puny amp" so i said really? then he asks me if the subs were old or new.. i said there kinda old.. a year or 2, so then he goes hang on lemme ask my bro.. he asks some guy and then brings me over and recommends this 1000 watt amp.. for like 200 bux, and then i need the wiring kit, and the warranty which will total to over 300 bux.. i said ok im gunna have to come back i dont have that much on me right now... you think this guy is trying to rip me off? he recommended a kenwood amp (i kno kenwoods r awesome) but it was also one of the most expensive ones there... can som1 help me out?
Kenwoods suck bro, that's not anywehre near a competition amp, and old mtx sub is no where near competition either. If I were you I would buy a 500 or 600 watt amp and run 300 to each sub. And make sure to turn the amp down so you wont blow em.
IMO 1000 watts for $200 bucks is cheap, but you may not need that much. find out the wattage because if you over power them they sound bad and blow but if you underpower them you will have to crank up you music loud to get bass.

Tell that to my 600w sub being powered by my 400w amp for the past YEAR AND A HALF.

Underpowering will blow a sub just as bad as overpowering...

Can you take a picture of the subs? Pref a side and an overhead view, I might be able to tell how many watts they are.
If you don't have access to a camera, I'd get a decent two channel amp, around 600-800x2 and put 200 to each, then work your way up to the max of amp and if the sub hits harder and harder, stop it where ever you want, since they are handi-down subs who cares if they blow

first of all you have to figure out what ohm your subs are they should say on the back. single 4ohm dual 4 ohm single 8ohm and so on. next kenwood sucks for everything and that amp im sure sucks. its a myth that you can blow your subs with under powering them cause if that would happenyou would have to have your amp cranked constantly. a underpowered amp will blow them if you clip it which means you crank the bass boost and gains all the way up. best buy sucks for knowledge on stuff and their equipment is sub par. you dont need an extra warranty because they already have on and if they say u need to buy one tell them to shove it you know where. if you can tell me some more about your subs ill find you a wiring kit and amp for under 200 for them and tell you how to install them. and if you have any more questions i can answer those too.
ok.. right now i have my subs hooked up in the back instead of the 6x9's.. these are powered threw the stock amp that i have.. obviously there not going to go that loud because theres not enough power and its kinda jigga-rigged right now but i'll take 1 out and take a few pics tonite and see what it says on the back of the sub, i heard kenwoods r pretty good but ive never bought anything from them, i was going to buy an alpine instead but the guy said it wasn't enough.. but i'll get back to u guys in a few hours.. have to go to my g/fs
