I say don't waste your $ on a Cobra. I have used Whistlers, Cobras, and a few other off brands. If you are gonna spend the $, I say buy either a passport, Valentine, or a high end Bel. I use a passport and wouldn't swap it for anything.

In the grand scheme of avoiding a ticket, is a more expensive one going to have any beneift?

How so? The less expensive one will give you enough warning to slow down to the speed limit. With instant on, you might not even get a warning.

Why speed anyway? How much time do you make up? The acutal time saved with speed a decent amount is fairly small. On a 25 mile trip, you'd have to go 10 over the whole way to save a whoping 4 minutes. Unless you are doin like 20 over all the time, it just seems silly.

I think the real reason for a most expensive one is that the pick up more, the less expensive one might not always pick them up, and I never spend, only once inawhile I just think its somthing nice to have.

Here is what is important to me in a radar detector. 1.) I like to have an audio distinction between all the different radar bands, so I don't have to look at the detector if it goes off. Often times cheaper radar units don't have this. 2.) It needs to have excellent range. Guys, it makes a difference, especially on the freeway. Better units can pick up radar at well over twice the distance of cheaper ones. Hey, if I'm goin 110 on the freeway, I need that distance. 3.) It can't give me too many false alarms. Better units have better filter systems to help this. 4.) It needs to have a loud volume setting. I like to listen to music when i drive, sometimes very loud. Often times I have found cheaper units simply won't give me a loud enough alarm. the better ones, like the passport, have programmable settings, allowing for a really loud alarm if you want it.
