I know some subs like the SoundSplinter stuff are made for both home and car audio, but i doubt very seriously that you'd have enough power with just your reciever to run it, Then again I may be wrong.

absolutely you could. i run an OZ audio in my house. depends on what ohm your sub is and how much juice your reciever has. you can get a plate amp too to run a sub and they are pretty cheap or a pro amp.

You can do what ever you want, I mean a speaker is a speaker, but I assume you are buying a car sub and wanting to put it in your room because it's rated at higher watts. I myself would suggest just getting a powered home woofer. It will work but like the other guys said as long as you have the right amount of power on tap, yeah it'll work fine.

the reason im asking is bc my brother is getting a new sub for his tahoe so i was just gonna take his old sony xplod and hook it up to my reciever, its a 4 channel onkyo with 60w per channel... i was thinking of hooking up my speakers to the front A speakers and the sub to the B speaker

If your a person who wants good sound I would say don't do it.
A) sony xplod stinks lol
B) you need a good enclosure, one designed for your sub cubic volume and the proper ports. You also need to take in consideration the watts (i've heard this before) but under powering a sub could result in amp failure.
But if you are going for the best buy subwoofer display soud I say go for i if you want lol

The first thing you have to check is impedence of the reciever. Most car subs are 4 ohms and most home reciever only go down to 6 ohms. If your sure of the impediance you still can only do this if you have a low level out to run the sub. If you run it full range it will usually sound like crap. Most recievers will only have a rca sub output which means you will need an amplifer to connect to the output and drive the sub.

For the people that say it isnt loud or sounds like crap, are eather trying to run it off there reciever bridged (which saturates the amp) or are running it full range.

pro audio amps work great if you dont mind the fan noise. and alot of crown amps can take really low ohms so you can get awsome power out of them.
