Default Wake County safety inspections and engine builds

Those of you in Wake County know that unless your vehicle was made before 1979, it is still subject to an annual safety inspection, but not an emmisions inspection. Even so, I am told by my favorite shop of 25 years, and others, that to pass inspections, all the vehicle's emmissions equipment (and everything else) has to still be "on" the vehicle, (whether it works or not).

My question is, what does this mean for engine builds that go beyond the usual list of bolt ons, which I already have.

On my '92 5.0, can I install new heads, intake and cam to pursue a 300HP vehicle and still have an inspection ready vehicle?

Hahaha emissions.....yeah heads are ok. It's pretty much just having cats and probably the egr system. Lots of the nc guys have done exhaust mods and no issues with the inspections. If you do have issues give this guy a call.

Heads, cams, intakes all OK as long as you don't strip the cats off of it or disable the EGR. By 93 the air pump was a thing of the past, thankfully, so no need to worry about that. You can put high-flow cats on it as well if you want to as long as there are cats on it.

As long as they don't use the sniff test, gutting the factory converters might be a cheap alternative. I did it on several fox body's that I owned and never had an issue. Of course, if you know the shop owner sometimes they can "look the other way" since it is only a visual issue rather than hooking it to the computer and having to pass that way.

Larry. .......settle down. No gutting the cat until you turbo it, only way for the boxer engines to sound good.

At least in SC we do not have to go through those tests!

If it moves, put in on the road. More and more of those sloooooooow two wheeler mopeds are out there with drivers dressed in all black. "Road Kill"

Can't go the speed limit so I classify those as farm equipment and pass them when it's safe lol.

You mean the liquourcycles? Shouldn't they have the reflective orange triangles bolted to the back of them?

One triangle on the back of the cycle and one on the back of the driver.
