i've actually been playing around with photoshop lately learning how to make planets and starfields (this one's scaled down, but the real pic is like 1440x900):

and to devon, photoshop can be downloaded online through adobe, but at 800 bucks (for cs4), i'd rather have a hard copy
if you are just beginning in photoshop, though, you can get photoshop elements 7 for 80-100 bucks at just about any place that sells software

Photoshop cost a lot. I would get Photoshop Elements.
Photoshop CS4 is $700 from Adobe.
Photoshop elements 7 is only $90 from Adobe.
I don't know what kind of difference there is between the two though.
mainly from scratch; you use the pattern tool for the clouds/land/etc; but overall you have to create everything.
