Default steering problem

I have a 66 that i converted to a 331 v8 from a straight 6, I had to have custom block hugger headers made to fit in the engine compartment. So now the original steering box does not fit, so I put a flaming river rack and pinion in the problem is that the racks keep breaking because of the 9" wide tires I have on the front end. Yes the rack sits level and yes it was aligned. Is there anything else i can do to fix this steering problem this is the second rack i have gone through and i am not made of money. please help. thanks Matt.
