Default I want to install '86 302 and 5 spd in '66 Coupe

Hey everyone, New guy here. I want to install an '86 HO 302 with 5 speed into my '66 coupe. Any problems with shifter location or clutch? I'd like to not make any permenant alterations to the car. Might have to install a clutch master cylinder? Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

It depends on if you want to use a cable clutch or not. I'm assuming your car was a standard originally so you wont have to install a new set of pedals.

The car is an auto. I'll need to install a clutch pedel. Also, I plan to remove the enine's FI and use a 4 bbl carburetor. Did the 86 use a cable clutch?

Hey Bob,

I'm new too, but welcome. The T5 conversion is one of the best swaps and lots of parts are made to do it well.

The 86 did use a cable. I've purchased parts from these guys in the the link below in the past and have never been disatisfied. They have 43 different parts for the conversion.

Installing the 5.0 will also take some work and is pretty well documented on the web. You will need to change the oil pan, move the dip stick and decide if you are going to keep the serpentine belt. The water pump exits the other side...so few things to think about, but not big barriers.

Well if you wnt to make as few mods to the car as possible then I would suggest going with an AOD conversion instead. It's the same thing as a t5 just the automatic equilivant. The only mods that you will have to make are to shorten your driveshaft and get a new crossmember or modify your original to fit.

Take a look at Modern Driveline. They have info and parts for the T5 conversion. You will need a different crossmember. I am running their clutch cable, and I am happy with it.

Thank you very much for all of your help. I've checked out the sites you've recomended and it looks like I'll have no trouble with the conversion. I'm sure I'll have about twice more in the car than it will ever be worth, but isn't that why we work on cars???

Swap the heads out with some gt40s beforehand since the 86 heads suck

You can also look at Mustang Steve and Ron Morris for conversion related parts.
