Why would someone do this?
Why a Chevy motor? Could not find a Ford motor? I have nothing against a Chevy motor in a Chevy but why do they put a Chevy motors in Fords? Is a 283 Chevy motor(for example) better than a 289 Ford engine?
I think you first need to understand the basis for the project and its performance requirements. A modular Ford motor was involved in the early discussion, and mention of Ford motors has come up occasionally since. Up and running the first time, I think he was only about $3000 over his initial budget.
Outside of the 1960's-available cylinder heads which - short of doing a Boss 302 head conversion on a 331 or 347 - clearly favor the SBC, I wouldn't rank the SBF as being particularly better or worse. I'm not crazy about the rear-mounted SBC distributor because of the effects of camshaft torsional vibration, but since the oil pump is at other end of the distributor drive it's back where the oil in the sump is going to go during acceleration. That's better than front-mounted oil pumps and long suction tubes, although timing should be more accurate. The SBF is 100 lbs or so lighter. Etc.
A nice all-Ford project now that wasn't available when Ron got started might be a Coyote motor in the new Boss 302/Laguna Seca (forged) trim, though it wouldn't have been anywhere near Ron's original price requirement then or up to the performance level that the car eventually got to with the LS7. Maybe a Coyote is what that poor 'vert needs . . .

Been posting this car over at Musclerides, thought I would try over here.I bought a 66 Mustang fastback out of a junk yard for $400.Thought I would challenge myself to building as exotic a g machine as possible for $5000.So far Car $400,Dana 60 truck rear with 410's and powerlock $75,Housing ends and axles $375,c5 susp. and truck arms Ebay $600,frame $400.Wheels 18x12 and 18x10 Ebay $900,traded some stuff for some tires.thats $2750.for the car and rolling chassis.I'm recycling everthing, flaring the old fenders and quarters for the additional width. My delema:I got a 4.6 2cam and 5 speed with wiring ***. etc off Racingjunk for $750.I don't think it will meet my power wants at 280hp.It seems like you have to supercharge these things to get any real power out of them, and that would kill the budget.I think I could sell it and make some money and put it towards maybe an ls1 and easily hit the 400hp mark, much cheaper.Should I keep it all Ford? its already got a c5 suspension in it.What to do???Ron

Could have had one that got blown off and they figured it wasn't worth the hassle of trying to keep it there, too. I imagine that there might be some strange wind patterns around all the other stuff.
