A nice edelbrock performer intake and 500cc edelbrock carb would be a good addition.

$166 for intake http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-2121/

$260 for carb with rebate http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-1404/

These motors really need to breath better and headers and exhaust may be the first step for me.

$169 for headers http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HE...l|BASE|CC|4950

If you really want to change the feel of the car, your best mod would be to change your rear end gears.....this really makes the biggest difference for the buck. Now if you did all three, you would have something that would drive like a different car.

Sounds like you're on a budget, waaaay back in the day, high school, most of us didn't have much extra $, and thats when these cars were available every week in the paper.

Swap out the intake, carb 600, nice free flowing air cleaner, headers with non restrictive mufflers, and enjoy it. Stay off the pedal and the secondaries won't kick in, but they're there when you need them. Glasspacks were big in the day, and it sounded like you had much more power than you really had when you nailed it.

okay, we just found this problem, it sounds like a diesel truck when you really step on the gas, would that be a blown head gasket?

Probably the ignition timing is set too advanced....

Or you might need to move up to mid or high octane gas.

Without other symptoms, this won't be a blown head gasket.

Hmmm...is it an exhaust gasket type sound? If it is pinging sound, then it is something else. Put a timing light on it. If it is an old motor and the timing runs off the charts when you accelerate, then it is 95% probably a stretched timing chain.

Diesel like sputtering and missing, (maybe timing chain as mentioned) or just LOUD, hopefully, (exhaust leak, cracked manifold)

Clarify what a diesel sounds like to you.

I think thats it, we haven't replaced it yet, but a diesel to me is like a semi truck at high rpm
