Default 66 coupe with "mild cam" 302 questions

Have a c-code 66 coupe with a supposedly rebuilt 302 with a "mild cam", cobra intake, holley 4-bbl, headers and alum finned cobra valve covers. I want to go back to a 2-bbl and have the orig 2-bbl intake manifold. My plans are to put the 2-bbl intake back on, get a 2100 carb from Pony carbs, put orig valve covers on and orig exhaust manifolds back on. Question boils down to whether any problems I may encounter going from the current setup to what I am planning? Thanks in advance for any help!

Main things off the top of my head, do you have the throttle rod for the 2bbl, the spacer plate with the PCV nipple out the back (not sure '66 is same as my '67 on this)? Have the original air cleaner?

I'd remove a valve cover first to make sure it still has stock type rockers vs. roller rockers as the stock VC's may not clear roller rockers.

You will of course take a dip in perf. with the changes as well as lower mpg going from 4>2bbl. but if you are going for originality and not driving it much that's fine.

I've only seen one pony carb in person (4V) and it was a really crappy core they rebuilt with stripped threads, etc., the friend who bought it returned it I believe. He couldn't believe they charged >$500 for it? You might want to search the net for opinions on rebuilders.

Default Thanks for that info, and...

...sorry so late in getting back. We have verified that we have the orig 2-bbl intake from this 302, which does have the spacer plate and hose running off it. Not sure how to tell if rockers are orig type. Main concern is the "mild cam" now. Not sure if should replace with a stock one and how hard that would be.

Well a '66 should be a 289 vs. 302, the casting numbers should start with C4 or C5 on most all your parts. You can verify the casting number and date on your block, it's stamped on the bottom rear ridge just above the oil pan mount. You'll have to take the starter off to see it and I'd take a rag, toothbrush and gunk under there with you.
Here's a pic of where you'll find the numbers:

Stock rocker arms look like this:

To change the cam you'll have to remove the intake, rockers, pushrods, lifters. Remove the timing chain cover, radiator, cam gear and I wouldn't change cams without installing new cam bearings which I've always left to the shop to do. If the cams not too agressive or obviously above stock you might consider doing it if you do a complete rebuild later.

I know there is a 1968 302 in it now - the orig 289 is on an engine stand, all of which was left out in the seller's yard for 5 yrs uncovered (morons).
