Default The "Problem" 65

Hello all,

I have been looking around and reading threads here for some time and finally decided to ask you all for some help with building my 1965 Mustang.

First a little background on how the car came about. My bio-father is a mechanic and for some reason a Chevy guy. In an effort to try and make up for not being around when I was a kid he decided he wanted to build a car with me. So over 10 years ago knowing I am a Ford guy we bought an Alpine Sunbeam. It wasn't a Tiger but someone had tried to convert it to one and totally messed up the steering so we got rid of it. Then he for some reason bought a 1972 Firebird and I hated that car and never touched it. So one day he went to a different shop to trade parts or something and noticed a 65 mustand in their yard and asked about it. They said thye had the title cause the guy couldn't pay his repair bill. So he called me up to come look at it. Well, the previous owner was trying to work on the car when it slipped into reverse on him and took off and was finally stopped by a fire-hydrant. Well it took some damage to the drivers quarter and it needed to be replaced but when they told me all I would need was $400 I went to the bank and had myself a car. Since that day she had been sitting in a yard outside the paint and body shop. Finally this past February I had the rear quarter replaced and some other minor dents and dings repaired (which I think I paid way too much for) and brought her home. She has a 289 with a 2 barrel and the body shop said that they got her started about 2 years ago when they had to move her from one side of the yard to the other. So here she is my baby that I have named "Problem".

Pics loaded for me, just took a very long time. How large are the files? Looks like it is pretty good shape. Any rust in the floors? What are your plans for her?

I will check the file sizes and see if I can't shrink them down some.

Over all she is in good shape. I pulled the interior and I have some rust in the foot well on the drivers side. It's got some pin holes and open spots where I can see light coming through. I picked up a welder from Harbor Freight and got the patch panel in so that will be my first thing I tackle. I have never welded before so I am getting a lot of practice in.

Once I get that panel in I want to get her started but I'm not sure where to start in getting that done. I know I am going to pull the tank and get it cleaned out and replace the fuel lines, pump and filter. Just need to know the parts to get.

Overall she will look pretty stock on the outside with the exception of the wheels. The interior will remain stock as well. Where I want to spend a lot of time and money are on the engine and suspension. As for paint and body I will be doing a lot of that myself as well, at least as much as I can.

If you don't already know, the online parts sellers have a multitude of stuff for the cars these days. I use National Parts Depot and California Mustang out here on the west coast's so cal area. Both have online catalogs with lots of illustrations and photos.

Thanks JLG2002.

I could get the original replacement lines and pumps but am hoping to put some pretty good power under the hood at some point. Probably going to be a stroked 302 to 331, but I dream of a 427 based 351W. I know about the towers being in the way but if I am going to go that far I might as well get a kit to modify them. So with all the fuel I might need going to motors of this size I want to plan ahead and get larger lines/hoses and better fuel pump. I am just not sure where to start looking cause I can't afford to do the whole trial and error thing too often.

Before and after of the front end. Got the hood and front fenders off.

Interior is all out. Looks like they replaced the carpet and used some form of glue to hold down some foam padding. Anyone have any ideas on what I can use to get this stuff off?

I thought the interior was very badly rusted, glad to hear its just adhesive.

Worse case might have you heating up and scraping that crap off,...messy!
