Default Bogging out at Stop Light

Ok so sometimes when driving for a decent amount of time and up to long trips, when i get to a stop light and are waiting to go with it still in drive the car will be fine and oil pressure steady, then randomly it will drop and want to bog out and i have to restart it in the middle of the road. If i drop it to neutral then of course the oil pressure goes back up and it idles fine but under the load of it being in drive it seems to want to bog out. Any ideas?

Do you have a tach? Whats it idling at in neutral and in gear? I'm assuming from what your saying that your car has an automatic transmission right?

No i do not have a tach and yes it is automatic. i have the car set by turning the idle screw in until it starts to bog out and them turn it back out to run smooth on both sides.

could be a vac leak start by checking for missing or cracked hoses or plugs that either either fit onto or block off vac ports.

Are you setting your idle in neutral or drive? If you set it in neutral, the RPM will be set too low when in gear.

When you say "idle screw" are you turning the idle speed screw or the idle mixture screw?

What brand of carb is this? What cfm?

The inconsistency suggests vacuum issues as mentioned above. Another possibility is timing. I would make sure your timing is set right and that both your vacuum advance and mechanical advance are working properly.

May I suggest investing in a tachometer? They make troubleshooting your engine much easier, something that will be useful as long as you own the car.. They sell ones that look just like back in the day so you can put one in your car and still have it look authentic.

I hope this helps.

Like rbowmar was hinting towards, you need to set your curb idle speed while the car is in drive. Park it up with the front tires against a tall curb, set your parking brake, and put the car in drive. Then set your idle with the screw. It will idle faster in park but when in drive it will be just fine.

You could probably do some tuning too, get a vac gauge and a cheapo tac for 12 bucks and set your two mixture screws for the highest vacuum while parked the same way with a warm engine, then check your timing and adjust your idle again. It will run like a dream.

It is a 600 cfm edelbrock...When i talk about screws i talk about the ones on the front facing you when you take the air filter off.

did you even attempt to follow any of the advice given yet?
1) did you check for vac leaks as described?
2) Did you set curb idle speed as described?
3) did you get a vac gauge and tach (cheep one) and used them as suggested??
4) did you check timing (static, adv and total) as suggested?

If so what number(s) did you check and what did you find?
