Default Pulleys Question....

ok well i think the previous owner got the wrong underdrive pulleys because there isnt asecond groove on the crank to power the power steering...or am i just missing something???

can you order just the crank pulley or do i need a new pulley kit entirely....or should i just get rid of the power steering....i hear it isnt very good on the old cars....

The fan and the crank should be doubles.

Looks like the PO put on an aluminum pulley with only one groove, and stopped using the power steering pump. Before buying a two groove pulley, make sure the power steering pump is still working. I see how the one belt is powering the fan and the alternator. I guess he was trying to achieve a one belt system without doing it right. [sm=badidea.gif]

okay, say i got rid of the power steering....how is the belt wrong still?

im just confused why they would make an underdrive pulley set if you wernt supposed to use the single groove pulleys in that way....

Do some research on the serpentine belt system and why it is advantageous over the multi-belt system.

i looked up some stuff and i think maybe it looks like it would grip better on the pulleys because its being pulled more against them rather than "around" them....i dono if that makes any sense to anyone but thats how i see it. Im pretty much not really wanting to use the power steering and will probably take it off as i hear its real wobbly at high speeds with all that play in the steering which is why the previous owner too the belt off and then decided to not get the dual groove underdrive pulleys because he was going to pull it out....is my pulley system okay how it is now in that case? sorry...im somewhat new with all of this...

Yeah, that is a racing engine, and the only thing they need is the fan and alternator. If that is all you want or need, then you are good to go. But, if you ever want air or power steering, then that system won't work. If you don't want the power steering unit, I suggest you take it off just to clean up the engine compartment and to get rid of dead weight. Also, see if you have any smog control stuff you can trash. One of the belts also helps to powers that crap.

it was built in san jose and has been there ever since, but its a new (2 years old or so) engine built by the previous owner...i doubt he put the smog crap back on....

but just to check....what should i look for?
