Default 289 or 302?

tore the intake manifold off my 68 mustang today to get a shock. the car was sold to me as a 289 motor but i found 302 WF stamped in the middle of the lifter galley. I think WF means Winsor Ford?, but any help or ideas on how to identify what motor i actually do have?

it means the heads are 302s. block could be anything, but it's probably a 302 as well.

What? It is a 302 because the 302 is stamped on the block not the heads.

Take the starter off, and get the code that is stamped on the block behind the starter. Now, with that code in hand, use this decoder to decifer which engine block you have. http://www.cehighperformance.com/for..._car_codes.htm

In 68 Ford ran out of 289 blocks before they ran out of internals. You could have a 302 block with 289 internals. Since you have the heads off you can measure the stroke. A 289 has a stroke of 2.83" while the 302's stroke is 3.00". The bores are the same 4'. If your bore measures larger, your engine has been rebuilt.
