HELP!!! problems starting mustang
i live in kansas so it snows and i have no place to put my stang indoors so i keep it outiside. last week i tried to start my 66 coupe 289 and it just made a zinging noise so i thought it was the starter however when i tried to jumpstart it, the car started so i just thought that the battery went dead well today i went out there to start my car and it was making the same zinging noise so i tried to jumpstart it and when i did i seen smoke coming out of the plugin things where my wires for my alternator and something else connects. i still tried to start my car and it started. then after waiting a while to let the alternator charge the battery back up i shut it off and tried to start it again and it wouldn't start.. i just recently put a new alternator in it... could the alternator be fried?? i don't know any suggestions would be awsome ..thanks alot!! kevin
wondering if your voltage regulator is going bad. Your alternator cant charge the battery if the regulator wont let it, so I would start with that. Sounds like the starter is not getting enough juice to fully engage the flywheel.
where would i get the voltage regulator? at any local parts store? i think the noise i was hearing was coming from the voltage regulator if its the thing mounted right next to the battery..did the smoke coming from the wires hurt anything?
most auto parts houses should have a new style 'solid state' voltage regulator for your Stang. THe original style analog was not very reliable. You probably could have Autozone or someone put a meter on your charging system to see what the alternator is putting out. If it is between 13-14, then the problem isnt your charging system. Might be better than parts guessing.
If you still have trouble, I would check the starter , sometimes rebuilts have the wrong nose cone for the engine they are installed on, which can cause binding, and also chew up your flywheel. Hard to know for sure without me seeing it in person.

Its your starter drive, this is a common problem with Ford starters. They are easy to replace. You also have problems with the commections in your charging system clean them and see if your smoking stops.

It has to be you starter not your flywheel because i mean why would it start when you hook up jumper cables if the flywheel was messed up. Voltage regulator i doubt very likely is what is wrong with it.
take your starter off in look at it ,,also turn your engine over slowly by hand,,looking at the wheel fylwheel teeth ,look to see if its messed up???do that ,,let use know soon,,
