Rat Fink Mustang
Well,
looks like I got a little over zealous on the tire sizing, and created a Rat Fink Mustang clone.
The Fox body 8.8" rear end came out sweet, and would be perfect in a '67-'68. In the meantime I've ordered up 235/45 17's for the rear, until I build the correct length housing.
It would also be perfect for running 6" back space rims in a '65-'66. These rims are 17x8 with 4.75" b.s.

Here is a couple of more shots to show how close this is. These rear tires are 255/50x 17 They measure just over 10.25" over all width, and are 27" tall. With a 245/45 or smaller, and either proper back spacing for the stock 8.8 width, or late model Mustang wheels they'd tuck right into the fenders on a '65-'66.

I put a set of `05 mustang rims on mine which are 17's (not sure on backspacing) and they worked perfectly on the back but the fronts needed spaced out an inch. Now the left one is good but the passengers rubs the frame's "flange weld" in a sharp right hand turn. Im thinking of notching out a small chunk of that flange. It would be no bigger than a nickel. Its not the frame itself, maybe you guys can give me some insight...
Just stitch weld the frame at that point and you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I wouldn't leave it open, you are inviting flex cracking if you do.
The 05 should be a 6" backspace with an 8" rim width. That should tuck in nicely.

I dont know, thats what they look like currently...

Im afraid once I take my car off the jacks the tires are either going to rub in the wheel wells of the beck ones are going to hit the quarter panel edge...

That should look real good.
Just be careful taking it off the jack. Also once the car is down it will take some rolling to get the car settled to it's ride height. I rolled mine in and out of the garage a few times While bouncing the car up and down.
Good luck, looks like it's coming along real nice.

Yes I like those wheels but it sucks you can stick big rubber on those cars without alot of modifications. Im going to paint that car prowler purple and those wheels should look good I hope. I have subframe connectors too, will that help alot on the flex cracking issue. Im putting a 351 in it too if that matters...
