Which oil for 351w?
Just wanted to get some opinions on which oil would be best for my 351w-4bbl.. it's old and worn and burns some oil, but still runs and sounds fantastic. I live in Phoenix where it doesn't get that cold (low temps around 50 and highs around 75 this time of year). Currently I'm running a Valvoline synthetic high-performace engine oil (10w30). Since putting that in I've noticed more lifter noise and my oil pressure seems to run higher than it did before.. I don't know if this is due to the synthetic oil. At any rate, I was thinking about switching to a different viscosity.. possibly a straight 30w. Any recommendations/thoughts? Thanks.

i've been told to use Motorcraft 10W-40 for mine but i a lot of people have told me synthetics are the way to go which is what i'll swap over to when i get the engine running and broken in.
We've discussed this at length.
Until you get the engine overhauled with all new gaskets, etc. continue to use dino oil. I was not aware that Valvoline made a 100% pure synthetic. Mobil 1, Redline, Royal Purple and Amsoil come to mind.

My main concern was whether or not it would be a good idea to do a straight 30w oil, instead of the 10w-30. I will try 30w when I change the oil next time. And I guess I'll still stick with the synthetic since that's what I have in there now. Not sure if it will do any good on my old engine, but it can't hurt. BTW, is it okay to switch back to traditional oil after an engine has been running synthetic?
Soaring,
I'm using Valvoline SynPower (full synthetic) 10w-30 -- "designed for high powered engines", or so the label says. Costs about $5.50/quart.

Usually, it's the other way around. Guys want to go from dino to synthetic. Not sure I understand why you would want to run straight 30 weight. If you are running synthetic already, why not just keep using it? It lubricates better and disperses the heat better. If it is oil burning you are trying to cut down on, then changing oil isn't going to help. If that is your theory, then why not consider 20-50?
i have a 351w in my 69 mach1 with 139,000 miles on it i use the mobil one 15w50 race oil
i live in ohio so i dont drive it in the winter but in the summer time i dont have a prob with burning oil, i switched over to syn about 4 years ago i have burnt less than maby a 1/4 of a quart in about 4500 miles .
my lifters have almost went silent no more smoke and great oil psi,i know the syn is not cheap but i think it worth the protection for cars like these
