289 or 302
i have a 289 and i'm thinking about buying a 302 but first i want to know how much power i can get out of a 289.right now its pretty much stock it only has a holley carb. i want at least 300-350HP under my hood. do you guys think i can pull it off or am i just better of getting the 302??
Well, You can basically do anything to a 289 that you can a 302. I'd keep the 289 for orignality, and supe that sucker up. 300 Hp is very reachable with a 289. Im planning on doing a complete rebuild of mine one day with all performance parts. TIll them, a 351C will be making it's home in my 66.
Here`s a link to a budget rebuild.

If your bottom end is in good shape; not leaking, burning oil, correct compression rate on each cylinder etc. You could probably just buy new heads (or machine your old), intake, cam and carb.
You should also check crate engines. They come with horsepower/durability per $ that is hard to match.

You can mod a 289 the same as modding a 302. The 302 will wind up just a tad faster because the rods are about 1/16" shorter along with the crank being different. From the pistons up put on new aluminum heads, aluminum intake manifold, 4 barrel carb, hotter cam, headers, electronic ignition, dual exhaust with good flowing mufflers. You will be looking at between 2 and 3 thousand dollars. That will get you the 300+ HP you are looking for. Just remember to match all the mods. For instance, if you decide on Edelbrock, then try to get all Edelbrock parts.
If you want to get real serious about HP, then the bottom end will also need to be rebuilt with racing parts. ie. crank, pistons, 7 quart pan, etc.

considering the 289 and 302 blocks are one in the same....why buy a new 302 when you could buy the "guts" and put them in your current block and sell your old stuff to displace part of the cost?
