Default fuel starvation

my horse wont stay runnin. its orig. a 289 2 barrel, but i upgraded to the edelbrock performer 4 barrel set up, everything besides the cam. it will start up and run for maybe 10 secs. then you can see (see thru fuel filter) the fuel filter get sucked dry and it stops runnin and is hard to get started back up. any ideas where to start, my brother suggested it could be the lobe on the camshaft getting wore down.

I would first check the fuel pump with a gauge to see what it is pushing. Visually check lines for kinks to start.

I had this problem with my 289 2v, but I don't think it's the same thing going on with you. The car would start fine but then die after a few seconds...However if I pumped the gas 8 or so times before starting it it was fine. I guess the fuel pump wasn't catching up, and the bowl in the carb was emptying before the pump refilled it.

Probably not the same thing for you, since you say the fuel filter is drying up.

Honestly I don't even know why I posted cause I didn't help at all, lol.

Somewhere between the tank and the carb, you are not getting enough fuel to the carb. My first suspicion would be the fuel pump. Take the line off before the filter and turn the engine over several times. Are you getting a good flow of fuel through the pump? If so, put the filter back on and try it again. Any difference in flow?
