I bought the Art Trantafello book, "Mustang Interior Restoratation Guide, 1964-70." I haven't started the work yet, but I read the book and was impressed with the detail and tips. I'm doing carpeting, seat belts, kick panels, and door panels starting next month, so we'll how much is in the book and how much is left to the imagination. It's under $20 and most of the mail order Mustang places have it (Cal Mustang, $18.95...may cost more, but l've had better luck with them than Mustang Depot). I also bought "How To Restore Your Mustang 1965-68," by Larry Dobbs and Donald Farr (one of those guys is Mustang Monthly editor, right? or used to be?)...that book doesn't seem very useful IMO. "Remove part A, remove part B, remove part C" etc.

Hey slyder, and welcome to the classic section of the MF. You want to preserve that crinkle finish, so only use a chemical paint remover. After that, use a self etching primer and the color of your choice.

Make sure you use lacquer based paint, it won’t fill in the detail on the doors! Don’t sand the door if you want to keep that texture detail on the doors, do like Soaring said!

Thanks for the reply guys. should I use mineral spirits to clean it? Would a auto paint supplier have this as I thought it was a special paint? Is it just laquer in the proper color/year I need? Mustang Unlimited just sent my deluxe carpet kit, my sifter kit is coming Friday and I forgot to order floor pan plugs did that this afternoon should also be here Friday so this is the next thing I can do while I wait for more parts.

Thanks for the fast replies it is a big help,

Slyder

I'll post some pics in the near future

Does this book talk about installing kick panel w/speakers? Or is it concours restoration?

Excellent topic, I replaced my door with a donor door and the inside needs to be redone to match the rest. Now I know how, Ill keep this tucked away when I get to that stage.

When stripping down to bare metal with a chemical stripper its important to get all the chemical out of there - I wash with soap and water and just before painting wipe it down with some IPA (alcohol - you might need to shop around a little) or acetone (acetone is best for bare metal) - if a little time goes by before you shoot it just give a wipe with some cheese cloth to remove any contamination that may have settled on the door.
As far as the laquer goes - its a decent paint but Im just not a fan of anypaint that comes in a spray can (does not wear as well) - there are some good acrylic laquer paints that can be mixed to match interior colors and shade.
hope this helps...
