Default 1965 questions

I just bought a 1965 coupe and I have some questions:

1. The paint color code is 5 which many charts show as N/A for the 1965 but Turquoise for the 64 1/2. What does that mean? Was this car Turquoise or not? (it's ugly yellow now, but not for long).

2. The tranny code is 6 indicating a C4 Auto but there's a 3 speed manual on the car. Is there a way to know exactly what tranny this is when I need parts or are all 3 speeds that would fit a 1965 the same?

3. The engine code is C, is there a way to look on the actual block to see if it's really a 289?

Thanks,

Chris

first, the paint, 1965 and a964 1/2 are basically the same car, just like nowadays, when a 2004 car is realeased in 2003, its still a 2004, the 1965 came out in april of 1964, so they called it the 64 1/2 . so it prolly was turquoise, im sure if u sand down, youll find some.
secondly, the tranny thing, a lot of people put 3 speeds in because of teh lower first gear and the ***** u can get out of it. im pretty sure most 3 speeds are the same, my friend had one that he put in his galaxie, then his falcon, then his mustang, all different and it fit in all, so im sure they must be the same.
and for the code, under the valve covers, look in the corner of the cylinder heads, in 289 should be cast into the iron. on my 302 it is, and on my 200, try that.

good luck

Definately look under the valve covers, definately. It will be casted into the center. Also, I believe a portion of I think the VIN number is a designation of the engine-i think its the VIN number. So if your looking to restore it to stock, thats you ticket, if not, have fun!

not to be negative, but you have to make sure the door on your car is the same door it had when it left the factory. If it is off a junkyard car, then the data plate would not have the correct info for your car. You can verify the doors originality if the vin on the plate matches the vin on the dash.

If you want to know exactly what type of 289 it is get under the car and look on the passenger side of the block near the back. there will be a casting number on it. Write that number down and go to a local parts store or ask around for someone who does machine work on engines, and they can tell you exactly which type of 289 it is. If you just want to know if it is a 289 for sure just take the intake manifold off and look in the center of the block in between the lifters. it should have 289 written on it. Just looking at the heads isn't always going to mean you have a 289 because the heads could have been changed. as for the tranny if your codes on the car say it should be a C 4 then it probably is, because it's really easy to convert to a 3 speed, and most people like a manual in those types of cars.

I beg to differ. The 64.5 and 65 are very different depending on when in the run it was produced. My 64.5 convertible "D" code had more in common with the Falcon than it did Mustangs. I found this out when I was looking for a backup switch. "Officially" 64.5 is anything produced before September of '64. There are some clues to look for, the easiest being whether your speedo has a GEN or an ALT light. Not going to get into all the others here though.

The fact you have a "C" code engine indicates you have a 65. The only 289 put in before September of 64 was the D code. Your paint code of 5 indicates Twilight Turquoise with a Ditzler # of 12893.

(Thinkin' I should stop lookin' in the classic cars forum...makes me miss mine too much.)

1) Yes. Turquois is correct. I would look for the spots that are hard to get to in a repaint:behing the rear seat in the trunk,up under the dash area, inside the hood/trunk openings(holes),down in the wheel well opening, under carpeting or sill plates.
2)The 3-speeds are the same for all 65-66 Mustangs. The only difference is the 6 cyl which is a smaller unit(not worth repairing if it gets damaged anyway). There is a tag affixed to the side of the tranny housing with a code on it to tell exactly what unit is inside.
3)There is a machined surface above the starter that has block id #'s punched into it. You could also pull off a valve cover and see if 289 is cast into the head.
