Default Transmission identification

I need to know what kind of transmission is in my stang. is there a marking on the trans that'll indicate what type it is? Now, i know what you're thinkin, "the vin will give you the answer". the only problem there is, the vin says 3-speed man trans and the car has a 3 speed auto. the trans and the color (which has been confirmed by startin the body work) are the only things that were changed. any help in identifing my trans will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

the VIN has no tranny code, TRUST ME...as for the 3 speed auto, it depends on the year and engine. If it is aluminum, it is either a C4 or a C6, a C4 has a seperate bellhousing, while a C6 has an entegral one, and if it is cast iron, then you have an FMX

I'm sorry, i didn't mean the vin. i ment the tag on the door. i forget what it's called, but it states production codes, color, trans, engine, int, ect.

the stang is a 66 with a 200ci inline 6. it's still cold out here, so when it warms up i'll crawl under her and see what i can see. thanks twister.

Thats what i had figured. my next question is, what do i need to get to hook a 5.0 stroked to 347 to that trans? i know i'd need to change the bellhousing and torque converter, anything else i need to change?

try changing everything but the case, there are less clutch packs than a V8 tranny, as for a V8 swap, the tranny is the least of your concerns, the rear end and front steering componants are barely adiquite for your I6....

True enough, and already being taken care of. got an 8.8 dif out of a 93 Mark VIII, hoping to be able to use the axle's with that for now. also, coilover front ($2200) and rear ($3500-$5500) suspension www.totalcontrolproducts.com . as for the steering, i'm going with, i think it's flaming river's, rack and pinion steering conversion.

back to the trans, should i just go ahead and convert it to a t5 while i'm doing everything else?
