Default 8" posi questions

Hi everyone, Thank you all in advance for your helpful suggestions.
I have an open 8" with 3.00 gears and i want to put a posi in it. I have never rebuilt a rear end before, but i am very mechanically competent other wise. I have found an auburn posi unit for $380.00, and a posi 3rd member for $1,000.00, what should i do? Do you think i can rebuild the 3rd member my self?
Thanks again in advance

I am not sure I understand what you mean by a "posi 3rd member". And the price for the Auburn seems a bit high to me. Do you mean the axle tube and axles? I might look at going to a nine inch if I was going to spend that kind of money...let me know.

What i mean by "posi 3rd member" is a carrier/ center section that is complete with gears and a posi differential installed in it. This would only be the 3rd member/ carrier/ centersection, i would still be using my old axle housing and axles.

Ok, I thought it looked a bit expensive. Check out this site http://www.dutchmanms.com/pricesheet.html#Anchor-65126
I bought from this outfit because they are local, but as hotrodman also said, Moser is a good supplier. http://www.moserengineering.com/ or Currie http://www.currieenterprises.com/.
Based upon Dutchman's pricing you can get a fully assembled set up for pro street for $1330.00 with a Strange Nodular case and 31 spline axles. I am sure they could do it for an 8 inch set up even cheaper.

Thanks, I found an 8" this morning with 2.79 gears at ecology. I'm going to have it rebuilt with an auburn posi. I decided it would be worth the labor costs to have it done pro. I like the gears better than the 3.00 i have currently with CA's unstable gas prices. Thanks for all your advice.

Your'e welcome. One other site you might find interesting is http://www.precisiongear.com/pgtech.htm It has some good information about the set up patterns and other "tech" stuff.

Well i finally dropped it off at my local drivetrain specialist to have an auburn posi put in with the 2.79 gears. It should get me out the door for about $550.00 I hope to put it in this weekend.
