i believe ford wanted to name it the cougar but that name was already taken.

I read an article about this a while ago, I wish I could remember where i read it. It was all about the early history of the Mustang. They actually had soem trouble thinking of a name for it and at first I think they were considering "Panther" and the logo was a panther with its arm out, facing left like the horse. Cant remember for sure though...
