Default Neutral Safety Switches

I am in the process of converting my 65 from a C4 to a Toploader, and am wondering about the neutral safety switch and back up light switch or mechanism. Can someone tell me what I will need and/or where I can find them?

Maybe my previos post is too vague. Isnt there some sort of switch that is needed to prevent the engine from turning over without the clutch being disengaged? Also, will I need some new part(s) for the reverse lights to work with the Toploader?

I appreciate any help.

The toploader did not have a neutral safety switch (got to use your brain to remember to kick out of gear before starting). The toploader does have a reverse light switch, but the switch depends on whether you have a Hurst shifter or not. If it's a Hurst, you can get the switch and mounting plate through Mustangs Unlimited. I'm not sure where to get them if it's not a Hurst.

Great, I can just picture my wife crashing through the garage door. Just one more reason not to let her drive it I guess.

BTW it is an original Toploader shifter, incase someone else knows where I might find a reverse light switch for it.

Thanks for the reply Rorin67.

YOU DA MAN! [sm=groupwave.gif]

I am ordering one now! They sure are proud of them (Price: $58.95). This conversion is costing me about twice as much as I had first figured. Same thing happened with my engine rebuild. Oh well, this should be one of the last parts I need.

Well, my back up light switch went south, so I took it out and cleaned it up and sprayed some WD-40 into it, then put it back on. Works great now. But, if you don't have one in the first place, then either bite the bullet and get the 60 bucks one, or try to figure out how an on/off switch from Ace hardware will work.

On old Fords, dont you need to have the clutch depressed to start the car? That was the neutral safety switch, the clutch pedal arm had to depress the switch to start the car. What year did Ford start doing that?

That is the way to do it, wire up a switch that requires the clutch to be depressed to start the car.

Wouldn`t that suck if you have a flat battery and need to jumpstart the car?
