Is it necessary to replace them? DOH! Yeah.....
I think I may start a new contest for the dumbest question from a newbie for the month.

Can someone tell me where there might be a how to for removing the valve covers on a 289 or tell me how to do it. I'm only taking them off so that I can get the Emissions off but is it necessary to replace them? They've been there since 1967

Just loosen all of the bolts and take'em off.
They might be stuck so you might have to pry them. You are gonna need new gaskets for the valve covers.
