Default Differential Dilema....

I followed the advice on the previous posts to determine my ratio. It is 3:25 to 1, 3.25 turns of the driveshaft to 1 tire rotation. This is not the number I was looking for.
As it is now, my top speed is 65 mph. Not that it won't go faster, it's the RPM's at that speed that keep me from going faster. Does this make sense?? I was hoping to just do a diff swap or ring and pinion change, 3:25 was what I was thinking I would change to
Anyone know whats goin on here? Shouldn't 3:25 give me a 2500 rpm at 60mph with 14" tires?

If you have lower profile tires, it's going to gear it lower.

What is your RPM now at 65mph?

RPM's will differ with Tranny gear ratios, rear ratios, and tire diameter. What tranny do you have?

I am starting to think everyone on this board should be required to do a signature listing tech info about their car to help us all help each other.

I have a 4 speed tranny with 2:78 first gear, (stock) and 225/75R-14 tires. (26.5 dia.)

Oh yea, I estimate the rpm's to be about 4K at 65 mph. It really whines.

I'm pretty sure that all non overdrive tranny's have a 1:1 high ratio anyways.
4K seems extremly high. Thats what my truck does with 4:11's.

Even with 3.25's you should be trucking at about 100 MPH at that RPM. Are you sure you are in high gear?

I've never heard of anyone wanting to go lower than 3.25's because they couldn't go fast enough (or cruise at a decent rpm). Like they say, I think you have some other problem. I dont think its a wrongly set tach if he says it is whining, I'm sure he can hear 4,000rpm on the motor. You shift through all 4 and still only 65mph? Assuming you do mean 4 speed manual, if it's auto, does it actually shift 3 times? I would also try having someone clock your speed in another car, just to see if you may have the wrong speedo gear.
