Default Stereo Dilemma

The radio panel in the 66' I just bought has been kind of butchered, it has holes drilled below the factory ones and has some sloppy edge grinding. I am considering just cutting it to accept a modern system, does anyone have advice on a kit for this? I have considered getting a repair plate, but not sure if I want to do that much work. I am not a resto purist and am looking to give it a few modern amenities like power windows also. Just feeling out for anyone with experince in doing so and how it looks with a modern system in the dash. Thanks

Nate

i have seen a lot of mustangs with aftermarket systems. it does depreciate the value of the car but if its already butchured then fitting an after market radio will only make things better for you.

If you did want to go original you could always buy the radio patch piece. It basically replaces the butchered for what it should have been.

Depends on what you want to do with the car. Mine is butchered a little too, sounds a lot like what they did to yours. I am going to put in a CD system soon, which will require additional cutting. But, I didn't buy the car for the resale value, or for concours restoration. In fact, I hope I never sell the car. My dream would be to be able to pass it to my children and/or grandchildren. I know the purists hate the idea of hacking up the dash, but like I said, this isn't a concours car anyway.

That is my plan also, not in it for resale or concours. Just want to make some nice mild mods to fit my charachter. I did look into replacing the plate, I just dont feel like welding a new one in, cutting is easier. If it ends up not looking right when it is done, I'll go back to the system that was in it. I also plan on jettisoning the horrible kick panels with the speakers in them, those things just bug me how they stick out. Thanks for all the feedback, this forum rocks! Everyone told me this was the place to go and I was skeptical, the past week has made me a beliver!

just buy your new stereo, they're all DIN size, so their all the same, use the shuttle cage as a template to make you your cuts.
