What Transmission do i need?
i got a 302 in a 1967 mustang and currently i have a automatic c-4 wich isnt cutting it. im debating on whether to put a manual in it and go through the trouble of putting a clutch in and all that or trying to get a better automatic. I dont like how i do my last shift on the 50. i also think having a stick would be really cool to have in an old car but is it worth all the trouble and work i would have to do? what kind of tranny should i get?
If you just want more power out of it check this thread out: https://mustangforums.com/m_1241398/tm.htm but if you're looking for better gas mileage/ final gear being higher think about changing your gear.
I personally wouldn't bother putting a clutch in.

when built correctly, that C4 will go faster than you can drive a stick....i do understand what you mean about the fun factor though.
i would stick with the auto, but if you want a stick most people would probably recommend the T5

i agree on the fun factor of a stick as well. but i notice i drive a bit rougher and dangerously with the stick, so i'm putting an AOD in my mustang. i dont want any extra reason to drive like a jerk and potentially injure myself or the mustang after all of the work i'm putting into it. my prelude has a stick for when i want to have some fun. that's enough for me.
Even buy a cheap Fox body mustang for screwing around with... They're cheap and are generally quite a bit faster than the "classics" Thats what I'm planning on doing... Cheap car for the fun.... Classic for cruising and looking good.
Automatics are faster than clutches, when you have plenty of power. I dont quite understand what you mean by "I dont like how i do my last shift on the 50" do you mean you are in 3rd at 50 mph? If so you either have a very deep gear or you are shifting too early. C4s are select shift, meaning you can hold them in low 1 or low 2 as long as you like. If you dont have a tach, and arent getting the rpm up there before you shift it, then a clutch wont help either.
Manuals feel faster because the shift is sometimes more violent, and you are doing more things at the same time. It doesnt always mean the car is accelerating faster because it has a clutch. The main advantage a clutch has over an automatic is launch rpm, with the correct stall converter that advantage is nullified.
The C4 isnt junk, they are a good trans and will take quite a bit of abuse. Moving up to an overdrive would be beneficial for fuel mileage and reducing engine wear at cruise, but the performance gain if any would be negligible. The C4 uses the least amount of power of any 3 speed auto that will take the power of a healthy small V8.
Swapping to a 5 speed is do-able and has been done. Its more of a preference than a performance issue vs a well built auto with the right stall.
