Does anybody know how (and If) late model GT40 heads work on a '66 289. Also, I would like to install a Hi-po style solid lifter cam. What cam should I use and what are the advantages/disadvantages of solid lifters.

 

i dont believe they match. i think gt-40s have a 4.6 ltr. so theyd be bigger. just call the parts place you would order them from and ask them, theyd give u the best answer

The advantage of a solid lifter cam, is that it is a solid link between the cam and the push rod, rather than a self adjusting fluid link. The solid lifter cam is more accurate and can run higher RPM's then the hydraulic lifter cam. The down side is, that on a solid lifter cam, you have to set the mechanical lash, where on a hydraulic lifter, it sets itself. It can be time consuming and a little difficult the first few times out.
In short the solid lifter is a better connection and more accurate at higher RPM.
For the correct cam for your application, as I have done many times myself, is to call Comp Cams, and let them make the recommendation for your specific application. They are the experts. http://www.compcams.com

Yes you can.The blocks are identical.Thats why you can swap 289 parts and 302 parts.

The P heads will need special headers to clear their unique spark plug angles.The regular GT-40's wont need the special headers.

 

Dude, check your facts, the 289 is a 5.0 ltr, so the heads would be bigger than the ones off of a 4.6 ltr engine. Think about it man.

He's talking about the GT40 302 crate motor and heads from Ford not the motor from the new GT40.

GT 40 heads most definitely DO fit on a 289.

A 4.6 is nothing like a 289-302 and litre size doesnt matter ****.Technically a 302 is a 4.9 you honestly think 3/10's of a litre make jack **** for a difference?

Not to mention a 4.6's outer diameter is that of say a big block.Yet its only a 4.6.

But as for the 289 excepting GT40 heads yes they will i assure you ofthis.If you question what i say ask your local parts department at ford.Or better yet get a motorsport catalog.

 

yep, in most smaller vehicles(my experience is with people talking about Rangers), you'll fit a 460 in easier than you'll fit a 4.6
