It appears Wikipedia is right on and I am the confused one, as usual.

Doesn't behave like it has a shift kit when running up under power.

No need for a shift kit. If you keep it in L It will not change gears until you shift it yourself.

My 66 Coupe was been converted from 6cyl to a 302 by the previous owner. Looks like he did all the upgrades (5 lug, front suspension, etc.) It has a Cruise-O-Matic and an 8" rear-end, not sure on ratio or splines. Anyway, the tranny runs fine but clunks quite a bit going into reverse and when getting on or off the gas. I'm looking a beefing up the driveline a bit, which tranny is best suited for daily driving and mild performance. Even though I drive her everyday, I like to push her whenever I get the chance.
