I drove my 65 about 200 miles yesterday, and noticed a faint smell of gas during the trip. It wasn't strong enough smell to cause alarm, so I ignored it until this morning. Well, I inspected the engine bay carefully for any telltale signs, and Nada....Then I opened the trunk, and the smell was in there. No visual inspection showed any gas leak, but when I pressed on the rubber hose that connects from the inlet to the tank, it seemed kinda soft. So, I took it off and replaced it with a new one, and WALLAH! no more gas smell. The guy at the local parts store is an old friend of mine, and he told me that the new hose I bought would need to be replaced in a few years because it was not a hose designed for oils or gasoline and it will deteriorate in time. So, I guess there is a special hose that I will need to get before too long, but for now, the old cracked hose ain't leaking anymore 'cause a new one has taken its' 'place. I also replaced the old 41 year old clamps. So, if you guys smell gas in your trunk, that may very well be your problem.
As soon as i get the exhaust and brakes squared away i could be getting my insurance and plates.I need to practice driving this beast. I dont even care about paint anymore. I just want to drive her.
Yep, My 66's hose is leaking. Im so lazy and tight with money right now i dont feel like replacing it. I cant fill mine up past 3/4 or it leaks all in the trunk.
Tighting the clamps will not help those hose usally get a hole in them between the pipe and the tank. You can get the right hose and clamps for less than $15 at NPD
