Default Knock when hot

My stang runs a little hot after an interstate trip then waiting on the exit ram on my way home from work. It gets about an inch away from the H. And when it hits this point there is a knock in my engine when I accelerate. And it always happens around the same time/place. What could cause the knock?

The knock is detonation, the engine is getting real hot, You have a over heating problem that MUST be fixed or

Yeah I would guess that it maybe caused by overheating as well but your description of the temp gauge is vague at best.

Are you fairly sure your temp gauge works?

How close does it really get to the H? If it were an inch away it would be running sub normal (cold) I believe the gauge has a bracket between the C and the H that looks kind of like this C \____/ H Does it get outside that bracket and touch the H?

Have you checked your radiator fluid level?

If you can, use a non-contact thermal temperature reader to check radiator temp near the top vs near the bottom.

Perhaps a flow test is in order here.

Not out of the bracket yet but very close to it. The guage works because i can see it at cool temps while driving under normal non-traffic conditions. Whenever I go too far though it gets hot!

The first thing you want to do is solve the overheating problem, then get yourself a phenolic spacer for under the carb. Your gas in the carb is overheating and vaporizing. Take your thermostat out, double check all the hoses, put on a new radiator, get a recovery tank, use water wetter in the anti-freeze/water solution, get a shroud, and get at least a 5 if not a 6 blade fan.
