Tune-Up
Hi guys im going to give my old pony a tune up this weekend and i was wondering about products i should consider...Im installing a brandnew Autolite electronic distributer, Spark plug wires, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, oil filter, and oil... Do you guys have any products in mind i should use? Does it really matter if i buy good or bad spark plug wires or oil? can i buy some of the walmart brand oil? i have a 289 small block...THANK YOU!
As far as getting Wally World oil, they sell Pennzoil which in my estimation is just as good as any dino oil. I use 10w40 in my 289. However, they don't sell good filters, so you will need to go to an auto parts place to get a Wix filter. Spark plugs should be Motorcraft B-42's and you can also get those at any parts place. Modern spark plug wires of just about any brand will be just fine. I bought a set from Autozone last summer. I specified it was to be used on the 289, and they fit perfectly. I would stay away from the cut-to-fit cheap-o's. They are a pain. Now, if you want any color other than black, there are mustang vendors who will sell you some really nice looking wires that will compliment your engine bay. I just prefer to stay as stock as possible. Depending on which carb you are running, a see-through in-line fuel filter will be good. Wally World probably has some of those. As far as an air filter, Wally world will have the paper type which are OK if changed often. I am thinking about updating mine to K&N in the near future.
Don't get Champion plugs. A while back I decided to change my 20 year old Autolite plugs. The car was running great, but just though they may need changing. I bought a set of champions, and they would miss under a hard pull. More than one cylinder. I went and bought another set of autolites and no miss.

You don't need the Lucas snake oil, but yeah, 10W40 in southern Kali is good to go. I live in Texas where we can fry an egg on the sidewalk during the summer.
