Default Rust inhibition

I need to do some work to stop the spread of cancer on my 66' coupe. I bought it about 3 weeks ago for a really good price with some expected rust. I know I will not be able to get to the full reso of the body for at least a year but I want to stop what I can see. At the same time, the paint looks OK and I really don't want the patchy primer look for the next year. I need some suggestions on how to just knock out what I can see and prevent it from growing. Here is what I was planning.

- Knock off the loose stuff and sand to the edges of the rust (I know that can turn into a whole body panel).
- Hit the rust with POR-15 or some other inhibitor.
- Paint the area with a close matching color in a rattle can.

Any feedback or guidance for a rookie would be well received.

Has anyone ever replaced the drip rails, seems like quite a tough job but it is in my future.

Nate

that's probably the worse thing i've ever read. no, do not do that. do it right or dont do it at all, unless this is only a temporary means of protection.

I believe all he wants to do is a temporary stop. By the looks of that rust, it's going to be a little more than surfact rust. I wouldn't be surprised when you hit is with a sander if you don't start seeing at least some pinholes.

Settle down mayh3m, it is of course temporary as mentioned in the post. I know there will be nothing but pain revealed once I start digging deep, just need to do someting to slow the bleeding. I had planned on getting the body resto done properly this summer but he SW Asain desert oasis of Iraq keeps calling me back. What I really need are some suggestions on how to quickly put an effective temporary halt to the spread of cancer, not some schome saying it is the dumbest thing he has ever read.

Well, I would say just sand it down till you get to some good clean bare metal and paint it with some of the por15. I did this not to long ago on the top of my 66 to prevent more rust till I could fix it. Its some pretty tough stuff.

Thanks guys. I'll check eastwood out too. Everyone seems to rave about POR-15 unless they get it on something other than the car.

I use POR-15 and would not use anything else... Been using it for 10 years and in my eye, best on the market. If Eastwood does not have what you need, give POR15 a try www.por15.com

Nate,

I have have almost the exact looking spots on my 67. I also need to slow down the decay a little until I have enough cash for a real job. Would love to see some after pics of how it comes out.

There are several rust encapsulators on the market. I have those listed with links in the FAQ. However, POR 15 would be my first choice. And, thanks for serving our country. You are my hero........
