Default 460 in a 67?

Hi all, new guy here. I'm laying plans to create a 67 fastback restomod. I'd like to do as much of the work myself as a learning experience.

What I'd like to do is buy a block and start building an engine, yes, even before I have a body to put it in. I was looking at 351C blocks, then set my sights on the 390.

Then, it came to my attention that my father in law has a clean 460 block that I might be able to get for my favorite price, free.

Can you even fit a 460 in a mustang? Do you even want to? In my inexperience, bigger engine means heavy, harder to cool, rating it in gallons per mile instead of miles per gallon.

Are aftermarket parts for the 460 available widely? Are they so expensive as to make this unrealistic?

And now the big one. Can you fuel inject it?

What's the scoop.

the 460 "could" be fit in but its impractical...my stepfather has a 460 in his,I believe, 1996 F350 and its a beast. It is fuel injected and believe it gets about 8-10 miles to the gallon. If you would install it, 1 it wont fit. U'd have to cut the shock towers off to squeeze it in. 2, I believe you'd have to get special made mounts to put it in and then everything has to be custom made to work around it. It would be cheaper to get the 351 than the 460, and I dont believe performance parts are widely available...

The 460 is the same block as the 429. 67's didn't come with a 429 so I'm not sure whether it would be a direct bolt in as far as the shock tower width. 68's had the 428, and I doubt there is much difference in the 429 and 428 size wise. the 429 came in 70 and above I believe, besided the 69 boss 429.

385 series(429-460) blocks are monsters...like the heaviest blocks ford ever made...heavier than boss 429 and the 427 SOHC or the FE's. youll need to fabircate to get that 460 into it. thats not going to be your dream price of free.

I dont think that getting the block for free is going to save you any money in long run because parts are much harder to find and also more expensive. I would go with a 351. It will fit, it will definitely be powerful enough, and the parts are really easy to find.

67s were offered with a 390FE from the factory, so those fit as well as 427 and 428FEs which are dimensionally the same as a 390.
To put an FE in there, you'll need FE engine mounts and at least the right bellhousing. If you have a Toploader, you'll also need a bigblock-specific input shaft, flywheel, clutch, starter, clutch linkage, release fork(?), not to mention accessory brackets, etc, etc.

If you go with a 351 of either flavor, it will be cheaper in the long run, unless going full race. 351 gets you Small Block Ford (SBF) form factor for things like motor mounts, bell housing, clutch, mounts...... etc. Conversion parts are available for some of those things, not necesarily at a decent price. A lot of the 460 items will require at least a little fabrication.
