Please help with settings for 1970!
Let me start by saying that almost nothing on my car is the way it is supposed to be, but this is the way I bought it. It is a 1970 coupe with the F" VIN. She is my car and My husband would rather sell her than fix it, but that is not an option for me.
I am having trouble passing emissions. My Hydrocarbons "at idle" are 1600 and the allowable amount is 350. We have checked for vacuum leaks and I believe that is under control. My valve seats are worn and the plugs get some oil, but the car still runs really well. This is probably a stupid question, but would the valve seats cause the Hydrocarbon problem?
My carb is a huge piece of junk. I rebuilt it, but found that the top seam is terribly warped so it leaks gas, but I cannot afford to get another one right now. The carb is an Autolite 4300 (#D0SF-F). It is from a 1970 Thunderbird with a 429. What would the correct settings be when on my 302? For instance the Accelerator plunger height setting for a 1968 with a 302 is 7/16 (I used that setting because it was the closest 302, 4V listed on the rebuild info). My car won't even start unless it is set closer to 1 inch.
I do not know what the distributor originally came from, but I was told it was from a 69 Boss? Below is what I can make out on the shaft and around the top of the Distributor. Could anyone tell me if this is the correct distributor or what it came from? It has single points and the vacuum advance is dual diaphram. It has a port in the front and a port on the side/top (see below). Would the correct point gap be .21 for my car?
I was wondering if my engine the original? My VIN is 0F01F131001 and the number stamped on the top of my block where it connects to the transmission is 0F11001. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Jodi

Where do you live to have to pass emissions on a 70 Mustang? I know nothing about the smog control stuff on an old Mustang, but I had trouble passing emissions with an old German built car when I lived in Portugal, and after adjusting the air/fuel mixture and idling down the carb, it passed.
You may try downsizing the carb. One for a 429 probably has a much higher cfm than one for a 302 originally. I would say thats your biggest issue. Although I claim to know nothing about emmissions testing because where I live they barley inspect that the lights work on a car and will pass it.
I am in Maricopa County in Mesa AZ. They require emissions for anything 1967 and newer. I adjusted the mixture screws so it barely crawled through with out stalling. They do the idle test in drive and it can't stall. Anyway that wasn't enough. That worked for me the last time, but I only passed by 4.

I would love to get a different carb, but I am currently broke! I am just trying to squeak by emissions because my Homeowners Association is going to tow my car as soon as I run out of temporary registration! It did pass the last time by 4 with the same carb on it? Maybe I need to move to Virginia?
Thanks

I agree, too much carb for that engine.
