Confused on engine
Well I was replacing the valve cover gasket on my 289 and when I got the cover off I saw some number on the head....it said 302....does this mean I have a 302?....or possibly a 302 head?
Thanks!

Hmmm.....and the only real way to tell if its a 302 is to look at the code behind the starter?
I also found some broken rounded plasti peices in there. Any idea where they might have comes from?

the broken "plastic" pieces used to be rubber. Those are your valve guide seals.....or what's left of them
When i pulled my valve covers for the 1st time, i saw the same thing. But i put new ones in a few months ago.

I'm not sure if you can see the seals by looking through the springs, but you could try.
If the seals are gone they might be in the bottom of your oil pan [&:]
A couple pieces of mine were in there.

there is a very good chance you are in the same boat as i. The 289 n 302 are very similar, but just have a different stroke. For a certain time in '68 some ford plants ran out of 289 blocks and stuffd 302 blocks with the 289 guts. post the number to make sure.
I got this from my distributor - c8zf-12131A yet I see nothing in my book of this code.
And this from the intake - 8ae - 9425 - B A - again matches with nothihg in my book.
BTW the book is the 1964 1/2 to 73 Resoration Guide.
