Default rebuild or not???

Ok. Soon, i am going to be building my 289. I suspect i have the orignal 54,000 miles on the engine. The only thing is, it smokes really bad on start ups, and there is smoke and oil, coming out of my valve cover holes. I know my valve seals are bad, and im pretty sure my valve stem seals are bad. Can that cause all the oil and smoke???? Another thing. My front and rear seals are leaking bad. I want replace them, and that means removing the engine. Should i go ahead and do a rebuild? I guess i can answer that question when i take off my heads, but i just dont want to disable the car for along time, because it is my daily driver, and my only transportation.

Bad valve guide seals cause smoke on start-up.

How's your compression?

Dont rebuild if its your daily driver because it always takes much longer then expected. I would just replace part by part so you dont disassemble everything and be down a car.

I will have the same tranportation problem to and from school, but my mom has a van for her business so i can use her altima, and my dads explorer has gas paid for by his company..... Just get an older civic and wear a paper bag when driving. But really look at the older ford rangers. They are not that bad.

You blowby can also be caused by worn out rings. I don't know what kind of seals the 289 uses, but if they are one piece, you can put the in without taking the engine out. You don't have to drop the crank or anything. If they are the two piece type, you still may can do it without taking out the engine. Just take off the oil pan and drop the crank a little.

BTW, I drive an F100 everyday.
