Yes and no ............. Supposedly the Boss 302 block had a higher nickel content thus making it tougher. BUT , physically the 302 block out of grannys station wagon will function fine as a Boss 302 base. I'd recommend an aftermarket steel crank and good rods for a big horse application and a good HV oil pump. The heads and intake are the keys to the puzzle and stock Cleveland 2 V heads will work best for most street applications. If you're going to go big horse and high rpm you might want to invest in some closed chamber 4 barrel heads and a good intake. The sky is the limit on these little devils and the bottom line question is how fast can you afford to go ? JMHO, Dean

I thought only the Mexican blocks had a higher nickel content. Those were used in vans and light trucks. My bad!

im not looking to actually build a boss 302....at least not at the moment....im just looking to hook up my power steering and im wondering if a pulley made for a "302 Boss, 351 Cleveland, 400" will bolt onto my 302. This would be a dual groove crank pulley so i can hook up my power steering, i didnt get a response on the diff between the boss and regular 302's in the other thread.

thats interesting the blocks could be differnt strengths though.

I could be wrong but I thought Boss 302 blocks had 4 bolt main caps.I believe they had the highest designed rev limit of any American V8 made.Next highest was the Chev 302.

Yep....4 bolt main caps. But he isn't concerned about that. He just needs to get a pulley. Shifty, the 302 crank pulleys are/were all the same. All the aluminum, billet and downsized pulleys didn't come into play until years later with aftermarket products.

Yeah, even though mine is the smaller 65, there are times when power steering would come in handy. But, I just figure it is the price I pay for driving a classic. I can always get in the 03 Mach1 if I want a bunch of modern conveniences and bookoos power.

while all of the pulleys were steel, the ones for a BOSS 302 ARE unique to the BOSS

You'll find that all of the high revving big horse cars used larger power steering pump pulleys and alternator pulleys. The alternator pulley diameter was intended to keep the charging capacity within acceptable range and the power steering pulley slowed down the pump to keep it from aireating ( turning the fluid to a pink foam ) . If you want exact applications, I'll be glad to check my factory parts books for part numbers and cross references. Let me know, Dean
