Default Headlight Problems & Questions

My Headlights work fine when you first turn them on, but then will randomly turn off then back on again. There is no method to the madness. So far, my research points to the headlight switch. is this repairable, or should I just buy a new one? Is there any other common problem with the lights that I should look at?

eBay has some nice clear headlights for cheap... under $30 for a pair. Has anyone used them, or anything like them? Do they work good?

I read someplace else about a relay to make the lights brighter, but never found any detail or intstructions. Anyone know where they are/what this is about?

Thanks again for any help... trying to learn as much as I can

First thing I thought of when you mentioned that is a short. Could be a connector is loose somewhere or the cable is really old. Try tracing it out to see if there is an obvious problems with it. Unplug them and plug back in to make sure they are firmly connected.

A relay will make you lights brighter by running power directly from the battery. The relay is triggered by you light switch.
I would say your problem is a light switch. It could also be a bad circuit breaker on the headlights also.

The first thing that comes to my mind is check the ground at the head lights That sounds like your problem. I've had those grounds come loose before and had the same problem

Thanks for all the good info... going to look at the wiring first. The more I think about it, I may just run all new wiring for the lights for safety reasons. Any suggestions on wire size, etc.? I have a hard time seeing at night as it is, so good lighting is important for me.

Yeah, the cheapest fix is to clean up the connections. The headlight switch may need some contact spray too. If that doesn't help, then replace the headlight switch. I put some new halogen headlights in mine, and it is a lot brighter than the original headlights. They are the same size and configuration as the originals. Most any parts store will have them.

I would replace the light switch first for $25 or whatever it costs. My headlights did the same thing...okay for the first 15 minutes and then on/off intermittently. It's a common problem...there's a circuit breaker in the headlight switch mechanism and it can fail. New switch took care of it...easiest job I did all last summer, took 10 minutes only.
