Default Steering Shaft Repair

A couple weeks ago I posted about the threads on my steering shaft in my 65 being completly stripped off and wanted to let you guys know what we (my Dad and I) came up with to fix it.

1st we turned an aluminum sleeve thats ID matched the diameter of the spline on the shaft (PIC 1).

We then turned a tool that had a hole bored in it the OD of the aluminum sleeve. (PIC 2).

Then we counter bored the housing about .5" deep to the OD of the die. (PIC3).

Then we dilled and tapped holes for the handles and 2 holes to secure the die. (PIC4).

So the Aluminum sleeve fit snugly on the spline and could slide into the tool as we threaded it on. That way it held the die perfectly strait as we cut the threads. (PIC5)

In the end the threads turned out perfect. We did have to grind the shaft's OD down some so the die would not have to remove so much matieral, but once the tool was made it was pretty easy.
