347 vs 351W
OK, I guess I will open Pandora’s box here....this can be quit a passionate discussion here Which do you all think is the better engine. The 347 stroker or the 351W? Which one last longer if both were pushing lets say 350 hp….and lets assume the 347 stroker was built in a Mexican block, not the standard run of the mill 5.0 block.
not if the 347 is built by someone who knows what they are doing. in the past 5 years the 347 has become a real engine that you can drive with no worries with all the advancement with the stroker kits and builders doing more of them.
At the 350hp level your not going to hurt either one. The 351 will make more power easier but will also get worse gas mileage. The 351 block and crank are strong units. The 351 is my favorite motor. However the 347 will give you more intake options, especially the "EFI" route. And definetly more room in the engine bay. Really its a matter of what are you going to do with your car. I think if its a performance situation then gas mileage is pretty much null so I would go the 351 route. To make it simple you can't make tons of HP and expect the best gas mileage, unless its fuel injected that helps.
Kind of like comparing apples and oranges in my opinion. Now if you'd said; compare a 347 stroker to a 427 stroker (based on 351W block), it would be more even-up.
Otherwise (IMO) it depends on the year of the Mustang. short deck block for '65-'66, or any pre-'71 Mustang you plane to road race, and tall deck, or big block for '67-'73 street/strip car.
Then back to short deck block through the MII and Fox body years.
With the right knowledge pretty much any engine can be built to be reliable. Just takes the right builder, with the right plan, processes and parts.

With out a doubt, the 347 offers more power, more room and less weight that its 351 counterpart in a 65-66 mustang. In a 67-70 I may opt for a modified 351 for more potential power.
