How much wider would a 275x40 be???
Well, I know its 50 mm wider but, being put on an 8 inch rim may restrict that, I don't know for sure.. Maybe someone who has these mounted on an 8 inch rim can let me know.

About 2 inches, 50mm mininum. Section width may increase more than that though.

Well, I just came across this site and according this this, a 275x40 should not be mounted on an 8 inch rim..

Here's a cut and paste with some info you might like:

This is a comparison of a 275 40 17 Drag Radial and a 255 40 17 KD.
AS you can see there is a small size difference
The 255 40 17 is mounted on a 17x8 rim and has a section width equal to just under 10 inches

The 275 40 17 is mounted on the same 17x8 rim and has a section widht equal to just about 11 inches

Now it is a little known fact that if you take a 275 40 17 tire and put it on a 17x8 rim it will actually measure up smaller than the same tire on a 17x10 rim (or even a 17x9) because of side wall 'suck in' <= techincal term
So now to the car:
As you can see, 17x8 4.75 backspacing with a 275 gives me plenty of clearance on the inside (remember now this is 11 inches wide which would be about the min any tire on a ten inch wide rim would be:

But now for the kicker
Stick out!

It is dissapointing though...since it actually fit quite nicely on the passenger side

Anyway......
Comparitive stances:

And now to blow your mind
Contact patch on 275s when mounted on a 17x8 and sitting at street pressure = 7.75 - 8 ish

Contact patch on 255s when mounted on a 17x8 and sitting at street pressure = 7.75 ish

granted I do get the benefit of a better compound and I do still run these tires at the drag strip, but I can't turn or hit a bump without rubbing. Good thing the strip is straight and flat
Now in all fairness, when you are at the track you also air down drag radials a bit so the contact patch would increase, but with these two tires as an example, on a street I have gained nothing with the larger tire other than bragging rights, and have infact instead added headaches trying to get the larger to fit and wrok without threat of problems.
