Default Roof Rust URRRRR

Finally got the guts to take off the torn and battered vinyl top off the coupe today. Found the car must have been rolled because the passenger side has some dents in it but not beyond repair. The main thing is that I have A few rust holes most the size of a pin tip but some are about the size of a quarter, about 5 or 6 all together. I am no body man by any means but I plan to get the roof to bare metal and coat it with rust protectant and spray on some enamel primer to keep the moisture out and stop the cancer from spreading, but does anyone have any suggestions on fixing the holes?

im going to suggest if your on a budget to use the fiberglass matt, and por15 silver to patch the holes. then use the por 15 putty stuff to go over the fiberglass in a layer......then sand that down as flat as possible and fill the little valleys and such with a thin layer of bondo to smooth it all out.

thats what i did on my car and its seriously SOOOO STRONG....that stuff is so great.

First off, thanks for the reply and the advice. You will have to excuse my ignorance because like I said I am no body man but I am learning (the hard way) on this large project. I have seen the fiberglass mats you are talking about, but I was wondering how to install I wouldn't think it would be put on the outside because it will be sanded off when you try to make flush. So naturally it would have to go on the inside but on the sail panel it is double metal so I can't get it in there. Also I have seen the fiberglass resin which I assume is supposed to be used over the patch, so should I use this product? Also what is Por15? Also wondering if I should go ahead and patch the holes right away because I have been told that bondo absorbs water and will cause rust again. Just wondering because I am no where close to painting the car yet just trying to neutralize the rust for now. I will try to post some pics to show you guys what I am up against, thanks again for your help. Well got to get back to work [:@]

POR-15 is great stuff! I used 2 quarts restoring my stang. Here is a link to there website. I bought mine @ a local autobody supply store; If I remember it was about $33 per quart. Good luck, and bodywork is all about patience and attention to detail, take your time.

what i did was cut the fiberglass to almost the exact size and shape of the hole, just a big bigger and then put it on there using the POR15 silver. I then waited for that to dry and applied the rock hard putty stuff on there. then sanded it down as much as possible, then use thin layer of bondo to blend it all and smooth it all out.

also, i think if you have primer nad paint and stuff over the bondo, it wont be getting wet.
