Default build or buy?

a buddy of mine has been through ford school and was born a bread on working on engine and cars. he says he can build me an engine for the same price as buying one of those remanufactured engines. (about $1500). he saying that if we build one it be alot more peppy than just buying the reamnfactured. i was wondering if anyone had any sugestions. i figured im not the first person to contemplate buying an engine or building an engine. but i do have to stay on a buget of about $1700.

I say build and learn. Be there for every step and find out what everything is and does. Then when you're in the mood for upgrades you'll know what your talking about. Anyone can go out and buy a motor, not everyone can say--"I built that myself".

If you're confident in him then might as well build it and know exactly what the babies got.

Hi there, there way I see it is do you want it to be A mustang or YOUR mustang. It sounds like you are confident in his abilites by your description of him and after learning and I would suggest helping where you can if he's willing and you are, any engine mods afterwords would be easier.

Go with your friend...all of these engines are built by someone so why not make it someone you know and trust? When you build the engine (or at least contribute) yourself the 'Stang gains a lot of sentimental value as well.

Definitely build it, that way you know exactly what you have. I used to work in an auto parts store and some of these engines they sell are ridiculous. I have seen many with cylinders that are bored different sizes, some are bored .020" some are .030" I am sure that your friend has a trusted machine shop, take it there and have it cleaned and bored if you need and rods checked then let him work his magic. Good Luck man keep us posted.

I am known for disagreeing with most folks on here, but with this decision I concur. Build it yourself.
