OK.... Problem, i need some help!!!
ok, so i was walking outside and i noticed on the driveway, there is black stuff, and it was coming from the exhaust. well my friend told me i need to rebuild the carb and add some STP cleaner that you add in the gas and it cleans. well i have an edelbrock carb, and sry for this dumb question, but how do i find out what size cfm i have?? and does anyone know anything about this cleaner? i moved the car and started it and revved the engine and nothing came out, but when i revved it into high RPM's some whitish greyish kinda smoke came out. anyone know whats going on and how i go about fixing this?
whistling like how? Vacuum leaks whistle. other things whistle in normal operation.
Running rich can also be caused by a stuck choke, too high float level, and leaks. On a Carter/Edelbrock carb there really isnt any place for it to leak, so check the choke. See if gas is coming from the boosters at idle. The boosters are the round things inside the venturii, when you open the throttle with the engine running you will see fuel flowing from them. Not squirting out in a stream, that is the accelerator pump doin its thing. Fuel should only come out under throttle, not at idle. If its flowing at idle, lower the float level.
rebulding your carb is a gasket change. If the accelerator pump is working and the car runs, putting new gaskets in wont do much for it. The nice thing about your carb is the air valve secondaries. They will permit only the amount of air the engine actually needs, and the primaries are somewhat small so you have decent driveability. That means you have alot of wiggle room as far as carb size, small engines will like those carbs alot better than large engines. 400ci and up will want something bigger.
Its not like a Holley double pump carb with mechanical secondaries, thoe have to be sized to the engine. The carb you have is more forgiving and can be run on very small engines with no problem. It will only alow the air it really needs. If it isnt bogginb bad, its just fine for size.

thanks, the whistling was the carb taking in air, im not going to rebuild anymore, i asked my dad and he told me to clean it, so i didnt and it looks cleann
Don't go by the exhaust to determine if it is too rich. Pull the plugs and looks them. If all you do is short trips in the stang the exhaust will get sooted up because it doesn’t get hot enough to burn it out. Everyone should understand that water is a natural byproduct of combustion. On initial start up all cars will spit water from the tail pipe. Combine this with the black soot and it looks like a problem. It is not. That is natural. If you are worried about too rich look at the plugs.
