Compatability Concerns
Once again another thread. Sorry but these forums help alot.
There are some modifications i would like to make now with my 302, i'm just worried about later on if i get a 351 if they will interfere and make me have to cut or get all new parts. The swap is a 302 to a 351, will the following modifications have compatabilty issues later on after the swap?
1. New Transmission Linkage- The Hurst Comp Pro linkage, will the alignment with the tranny change at all?
2. New Exhaust pipes, same headers.
3. Power Steering Assembly-pulleys etc.
Thanks again

ull need different headers and the pump will be the same but u might have to get a different bracket for it? ull have to try it out! trans angle will not change
And This shifter linkage seems to be the one of the best for our cars correct? Just that package and i'm good to go?

yeah there supposed to be one of the best upgrades i got a toploader in the 65 ill save up for it one day as soon as i get it running and driving reliably
The 351W block is taller. Being a "V" this makes the heads sit higher and farther apart than on a 302. This is just enough difference to make 289/302 headers unusable.
The power steering an AC brackets are unique to 351W's. The mounting holes in the block, heads and at the water pump are different. I'm told 69's have unique brackets. I assume you don't care about being "correct" so you'll want to hunt some 70 or later brackets. Try to get a matched set, no matter what they actually come off of. Many brackets look amazingly similar but won't match up with another a bracket a year newer or older (been there done that, got a big dang box of brackets that should have worked but didn't).
Generally speaking, if the 351W looks like yours then your 302 pump will work just the same. Mostly.
Odds are pretty good that you can reuse your alternator brackets. It's common for the uppermost alternator bracket that's bolted onto the head too have two holes, one for 302 use, the other for 351W use. If you have the early "single" hole type you can scrounge the double type off almost any 70's to early 80's small block. Early ones are cast iron. Later ones are aluminum and prone to breaking. It's possible your existing alternator setup may not allow the belt to line up correctly. A crap shoot. If you're lucky the upper mount will be all you need. If not....
The very best way to do this sort of swap is to find a complete pulley/bracket/fan setup on a dead car and rob ALL of it. Bolts, brackets. every single pulley, and all. Even if you could swear you won't need a particular bit (like you don't have AC, why would you want the bracket?) get it anyway. Leave nothing behind on the front of the donor engine except the timing cover and harmonic balancer. Get the water pump too, even if it's absolute junk. Trust me on this.

also the motor will be taller as well as wider. i dunno what kind of clearance you have under the hood as is (and i must say that hood compliments the car well) you may have to get a cowl hood to give you the extra inches to clear the air cleaner. i'm doing a 351c swap into my 66 and there is like 0 room to play with just between the towers. let alone the hood clearance. now if i'm correct (its 4 in the morn and i'm kinda whooped) you have a 69 and there is a lot of room side to side, but i don't know about hood clearance. and if you wanna go all out and you have an extra 1-2K burning a hold in your pocket you cna get a brand new complete set of pullies.

i got a 69 with a 351C in it, there is enough room for it too fit, now the lady told me she had to remove the A/C components cause they wouldnt fit, which i kinda believe her and at the same time i think she is fulla sh*t. she probably lost or broke them.[:@]

yeah, prolly. someone here said 351w which is a bit bigger/wider. what needs be be decided on is which block is going to be used. the 351c or the 351w.
